Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is the sixth generation in a lineage of sarod players.  The Khan family contributed to the development of the sarod in India from the rabab in Afghanistan.

The sarod’s distinctive is its lack of frets, allowing a tone to be bent across six notes by sliding a fingernail along its metal fretboard.  The strings are plucked with a piece of coconut to produce a heavier sound than the sitar.

Ustad Amjad Ali Khan performed an open air concert in Nehru Park.  It was dedicated to the victims of Mumbai’s November ’08 terrorist attack.
