Delhi is the world’s second largest metro area and its largely unknown–even to its own residents. “We don’t know much about the city,” says Delhi based planner Krishnamenon. Little is known, written or done about the lives of Delhi’s inhabitants.
The need to know Delhi is touched by a new urban biography, Finding Delhi: Loss and Renewal in the Megacity. The book explores the gap between the dreams and condition of Delhi’s citizens.
The book’s editor, Bharti Chaturvedi, describes the book as a doctor taking the pulse to find how high a patient’s fever is. “This book is about how we dream about our city and it holds a mirror up to the city,” says Chaturvedi.
The city attracts all kinds of people with big dreams for their lives. Its population is deeply stratified and yet the city depends on each group for its survival.
